and it's well for me that bound me profits is more important than my baby's well being how do i know how to make the right decision. standing to seminar on. this is d w news live from berlin tonight donald trump's decision on jerusalem defying all warnings but is it the threat to mideast peace that so many have predicted. i have to determine that it is time to officially
8:01 pm
recognize jerusalem as the capital of israel u.s. president donald trump breaks with international law and decades of america's own policy i'll ask a panel of experts what it means for hopes of peace in the region and palestinian aspirations to stay took. off it's good to have you with us u.s. president has made a historic decision to recognize jerusalem as the capital of israel it's a move that breaks with international convention and ignores warnings from the palestinians that it could sink the midi speace process now to discuss this momentous move i'll be speaking with a panel of correspondents and analysts from washington to jerusalem also right here in berlin but first we want to take a listen to that speech from the u.s.
8:02 pm
president donald trump. when i came into office i promised to look at the world's challenges with open eyes and very fresh thinking we cannot solve our problems by making the same failed assumptions and repeating the same failed strategy it's of the past all challenges demand new approaches my announcement today marks the beginning of a new approach to conflict between israel and the palestinians in one thousand nine hundred five congress adopted the jerusalem embassy act urging the federal government to relocate the american embassy to jerusalem and to recognize that that city and so importantly is israel's capital this act passed congress by an overwhelming bipartisan majority
8:03 pm
and was reaffirmed by unanimous vote of the senate only six months ago yet for over twenty years every previous american president has exercise the laws waiver refusing to move the u.s. embassy to jerusalem or to recognize jerusalem as israel's capital city presidents issue these waivers under the belief that delaying the recognition of jerusalem would advance the cause of peace some say they lacked courage but they made their best judgment based on facts as they understood them at the time nevertheless the record is in. after more than two decades of waivers we are no to los or to
8:04 pm
a lasting peace agreement between israel and the palestinians it would be folly to assume that repeating the exact same formula would now produce a different or better result therefore i have determined that it is time to officially recognize jerusalem as the capital of israel while previous presidents have made this a major campaign promise they failed to deliver today i am delivering i've judged this course of action to be in the best interests of the united states of america and the pursuit of peace between israel and the palestinians this is a long overdue step to advance the peace process and to work towards a lasting agreement israel is
8:05 pm
a sovereign nation with the right like every other sovereign nation to determine its own capital but today we finally acknowledge the obvious that you're a slim is israel's capital this is nothing more or less than a recognition of reality it is also the right thing to do it's something that has to be done that is why consistent with the jerusalem embassy act i am also directing the state department to begin preparations to move the american embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem. this will immediately begin the process of hiring architects engineers and planners so that a new embassy when completed will be a magnificent tribute to peace in making these announcements i also want to make
8:06 pm
one point very clear this decision is not intended in any way to reflect a departure from our strong commitment to facilitate a lasting peace agreement we want an agreement that is a great deal for the israelis and a great deal for the palestinians we are not taking a position of any final status issues including the specific boundaries of the israeli sovereignty in jerusalem or the resolution of contested borders it is time for young and moderate voices all across the middle east to claim for themselves a bright and beautiful future. so today let us read dedicate ourselves to
8:07 pm
a path of mutual understanding and respect let us reach think old assumptions and open our hearts and minds to possible and possibilities and finally i asked the leaders of the region political or religious israeli and palestinian jewish and christian and muslim to join us in the noble quest for a lasting peace thank you god bless you god bless israel god bless the palestinians and god bless the united states thank you very much thank you. for that was u.s. president donald trump there speaking from the white house we want to get palestinian reaction now in to do that i'm joined by is over a year and in visors of the palestinian liberation organization good evening to you let me get your reaction to what the u.s. president said today. this is clearly not the time for peace and
8:08 pm
reconciliation like president trump tried to present but on the contrary what president tom has done tonight is to disqualify the united states from playing any role in any peace process he has. the result of another status or negotiation click to do so and he has totally disregarded not only the national rights of the palestinian people but also the coast of russia countries of latin american countries of china etc what he has done today has nothing to do with peace and on the contrary. let me let me ask you how is the answer the president was very adamant in his speech that the united states he supports the two state solution and that he is still pushing for peace between the palestinians in the israelis and he also did not mention once that any parameters around the city of jerusalem are changing so how can you say that he's disqualified himself because it
8:09 pm
sounds like nothing's going to change. allow me to correct you he never said that he supported. that but at least palestinians and israelis support to see a solution he would be willing to support us so he's also going away from my story because u.s. position what he said today was to recognize jerusalem as the capital of history does not recognize west so then he recognized jerusalem this is an encouragement for settlement expansion i don't know if you have seen how many palestinian homes have been demolished occupy gypsum over the past few weeks over the past sixty years of occupation and therefore once again this is step is going to the illegal israeli actions and something or anywhere closer to peace. i want to play a clip from the u.s. president's speech today where he talks about the two state solution let's just take a listen to that. the united states remains deeply committed to helping
8:10 pm
facilitate a peace agreement that is acceptable to both sides i intend to do everything in my power to help forge such an agreement without question jerusalem is one of the most sensitive issues in those talks the united states would support a two state solution if agreed to by both sides so he's saying and as you said earlier if the palestinians and the israelis both want the two state solution they have american backing isn't that what you want. the fact that matters is that palestine have to recognize israel over the one thousand six or seven border want to come to the man over thirty years ago is one hundred so you could do so this will continue to build illegal quantity of settlements inside the occupied the state of palestine and when and the united
8:11 pm
states is not doing much in order to stop the so called the vision of the two state solution is being destroyed because of our eyes and the united states to this person trump has encouraged this process by facilitating something but the extremist israeli government has been calling course on what happened now what will happen next. palestinian central council is going to be very soon going to analyze part of this is going to see what the next steps are going to be taken but something that has been very repeated all over palestine tonight is that the u.s. has disqualified itself from playing and it will in any peace process. and if you if you are not recognizing the u.s. as a peace broker in the middle east then will replace the u.s. in the eyes of the palestinians. this summer good question because i just had the
8:12 pm
hardest times of counsel to the palestinian leadership from the front to this front will have to meet with the first. point like all the decisions what we have to offer if i were commitment going to a national i want commitment to do what the solutions and all the previous agreements have signed up to respect and we were just getting reaction from cyber erekat the secretary general and the below executive committee let's take a listen to their step is he judged pre-judging dictating closing the doors for negotiations and i think president trump tonight disqualified the united states of america to any or all in any peace process plus the new leadership will call for an emergency session for the past time since the council to study this speech and to review all the options available and take the
8:13 pm
proper decisions concerning many issues and the same time i would say that crossing these headlines tonight for president from speaking about moderation speaking about nonviolence i think tonight he is strengthening the forces of the mists in this region as no one has done before this is an act statement that's totally uncalled for to our next and acceptable. jerusalem is about territory no country on earth have a good night is about an exception for jerusalem except for president trump tonight he's important violation of international law human rights and his standing in the conflict between palestinian israelis from a political one into really just one that's a very dangerous situation. and obviously very emotional mr erekat there so i do have to ask you we know that palestinian groups including hamas are calling
8:14 pm
for three days of rage in protest what will that look like to you know. i don't know what i know is that in palestine there's the violence to use a foreign colonial occupation that exposes violence with a bias against palestinians and palestinians don't have the right to take nonviolent action and against this injustice and once again let's think of the people of jerusalem let's think of the three hundred thousand palestinians that are there and whose fights are being sort of violence is by other system the one thing that's nothing to do with peace that's nothing to want to negotiations and has when you want to do with other issues that's unfortunately influencing this american policy. so here i will i advisor to the palestine liberation organization we appreciate you taking the time to give us your first reactions to the u.s.
8:15 pm
